The New Orleans Saints demonstrated on Monday night why they probably have a long way to go before becoming a genuine contender in the NFC South. Now off to an 0-3 start, they are really desperate for their first victory, and they have to travel to the West Coast to face off against the San Diego Chargers in a game that begins at 4:25 PM ET at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. This will, believe it or not, be the first time quarterback Drew Brees has returned to San Diego in an opposing uniform since he left the Chargers for the Saints. You really can’t blame Brees for what took place last week; he had 376 yards and three touchdowns passing, but his team’s defensive unit just couldn’t deal with the Atlanta Falcons, who ran away with a 45-32 victory. New Orleans has now allowed 453 yards per game, and that is next to last in the NFL. Obviously it does not help that they have a number of injuries, especially in the secondary, so they are most definitely short-handed. The Chargers, like the Saints, lost a couple of games that perhaps they should have won. In the season opener, they blew a 24-3 lead against the Kansas City Chiefs and lost in overtime. Last week, they had the lead with less than two minutes to go and were beaten by Indianapolis on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Luck to TY Hilton.

San Diego has its share of injuries as well. The team’s best wide receiver, Keenan Allen, is out for the year with a knee injury, and running back Danny Woodhead, who is also extremely useful in the passing attack, has suffered the same fate. But that is no excuse for Melvin Gordon, who was really being counted on to make strides in his second season. While he had over 100 yards in a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was a minor contributor against Indianapolis, and currently is averaging only 3.6 yards per carry, although he has four touchdowns on the ground, which are four more than he had in his rookie season.

Travis Benjamin, who played with Cleveland last year and came over as a free agent, has been a key addition at the wide receiver spot, accounting for 229 yards thus far. Remember also that the Chargers defend both the past and the run better.
