When you look at both of these teams, they are definitely not in this position by accident. They competed in what were arguably the two strongest conferences in the nation this year; TCU was part of the Big 12, while Georgia Tech is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Regardless of how those conferences have done in the NCAA Tournament, these schools have put up some great wins. TCU defeated both Iowa State and Kansas State, and most notably, they eliminated Kansas from the Big 12 tournament at a time when the Jayhawks were the #1 team in the country. Still, they could not get an at-large invite into the Big Dance, mostly because they did lose seven straight games to close out the regular season, although several of them were very close. In the NIT, they have won four straight games, and showed utter dominance over the last 25 minutes or so against Central Florida, coming back from a 29-19 deficit to score a 68-53 triumph. In that game, they held the Knights to just 35 points over the last 30 minutes, and had 15 offensive rebounds.

BetAnySports patrons who are not familiar with Georgia Tech – which has victories over Florida State, Notre Dame and North Carolina (which is in the Final Four) – might want to know that they are an absolute nightmare to deal with inside the three-point arc. That is mostly because of Ben Lammers, the 6-10 center who is one of the better shot blockers in the country. Lammers has registered 18 blocks in the NIT, including 13 over the last two games. So understandably, Georgia Tech often forces its opponents to shoot from the outside. TCU is serviceable in that regard, hitting 35.8%, but you really can’t consider them an overwhelming threat. What the Frogs will have to do is to neutralize somebody like Lammers, just as they did with UCF’s Tacko Fall, with Vladimir Brodziansky, the 6-11 Slovakian who had 18 points against Central Florida, with five offensive rebounds. Yes, keeping TCU away from the offensive glass is going to be a major assignment for Georgia Tech in this game. If they can do it, and minimize second-shot opportunities, they actually could be in a position where they are an underdog who can dominate the action. It would also help if freshman guard Josh Okogie, who has really come alive in this tournament for them, can continue his hot scoring. So far he has averaged 21.8 points, so he is a great complement for the likes of Lammers (67%, 36 rebounds in the NIT) and Quinton Stephens (27 defensive rebounds, 42% from beyond the arc).
