The USC Trojans executed a three-game sweep of the UCLA Bruins last season, and that has really stuck in the craw of those players who came back for UCLA this season. But this team has a different makeup, as two fabulously talented freshmen have joined the fold, and they have made the Bruins a possible national championship contender. Certainly they can look ahead to an appearance in the Big Dance, but you can bet all their focus is going to be on Wednesday night’s game against USC, which gets underway at 11 PM ET at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. UCLA comes into this game with a record of 19-2 straight-up (12-9 against the basketball pointspread), while USC is 17-4 straight-up and 9-11 versus the points. UCLA went out and recruited the first and second-place finishers in the voting for Mr. Basketball in California last season. Lonzo Ball (the winner) is a 6-6 guard who is averaging 14.9 points per game. Andy Enfield, the USC coach, knows he’s going to have some difficulty matching up with Ball, but it looks like he’s going to use De’Anthony Melton against him. These two played against each other in high school. And another of Ball’s former opponents in the high school ranks is now his teammate. TJ Leaf is a very talented 6-10 forward who says he came to UCLA because he developed a great relationship with coach Steve Alford. But prior to that he had been committed to the University of Arizona. Then he tried out for the US Under-19 team, headed up by Arizona coach Sean Miller, and was cut. Subsequently, he switched his allegiance. And that’s just teh way it goes in college recruiting. The versatile Leaf did not have an especially good game going up against Miller’s Wildcats last time out, scoring just 12 points with three rebounds as UCLA lost a 96-85 decision. But earlier in the season he had 17 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, as UCLA opened a lot of eyes with a victory over Kentucky at Rupp Arena. They recently dropped in the polls, to seventh in the Coaches rankings and eighth with the Associated Press, but maybe they’ll get a chance to move up, since Villanova, Kansas and Kentucky all lost on Tuesday night.

BetAnySports patrons may recall that USC not only swept UCLA in three games for the first time since 1942, but they won all of last season’s meetings by double digits, including a resounding 95-71 victory in the Pac 12 conference tournament. So obviously there is a strong motive for revenge on the part of the Bruins. They have a nice blend of youth and experience, with seniors Isaac Hamilton and Bryce Alford (the coach’s son) joining the freshmen in the starting lineup. UCLA is a very dangerous three-point shooting team, hitting 43.4%, second-best in the nation. And because they play a very up-tempo game, they have scored 93 points per contest. They will start four different players who shoot at least 43% from downtown, and you have to wonder whether USC can keep pace with guards Jordan McLaughlin and Elijah Stewart, the latter of whom scored 29 points in the Trojans posse’ last victory against Arizona State.
