One thing you can most certainly say about Notre Dame is that they did not close the season out with very much momentum; in fact, it was purely the opposite, as they lost their last four games and gave up 178 points in the process. This was obviously a total reversal from the way it was earlier in the season for Brian Kelly’s team, which had won its first six games and looked like it might be a contender for one of the four spots in the college football playoff. But then came that ill-fated loss to the Florida State in Tallahassee, in which they had an opportunity to win but were victimized by a controversial pass interference penalty which nullified a touchdown.

After that it was a life-and-death game against Navy, followed by those four losses to close out the season. As far as the college football betting odds were concerned, they were 6-0-1 to the “over” in their last seven games. And that was mostly because they couldn’t play any defense. Losing linebacker Joe Schmidt earlier in the schedule was a big blow, and that obviously affected the way that they defended the run. BetAnySports sports betting customers know the Notre Dame is given up 244 yards per game on the ground in their last five, and that can really be a deathknell against this LSU team, which comes with a lot of running backs, including freshman Leonard Fourtnette, who averaged 5.1 yards per carry.

The big challenge for the Bayou Bengals is generating some balance in the offense, as Anthony Jennings is little more than a novice at the quarterback position. He completed less than 50% of his passes, and as a team LSU had only 164 passing yards per game. Fortunately for them, they have the superior defense in this contest, and that will have its affect on Notre Dame’s quarterback. Normally we would say that is going to be Everett Golson, who led this team to the national championship game two years ago and was getting a little bit of Heisman buzz over the first six games as Notre Dame was undefeated.

However, as BetAnySports patrons are aware, the turnovers really caught up to him (22 on the season) and Brian Kelly has elected to give the start to Malik Zaire, a left-hander who runs better than Golson but is much less polished throwing the ball. He completed nine of his 20 passes in the season finale against USC. We wonder whether Kelly is sore that Golson has been investigating his possibilities for entering the draft. This non-start certainly won’t help his market value, and neither will this experience against the LSU stop unit, which is ranked first in the nation in passing efficiency defense, if he does indeed see action.
