The Purdue Boilermakers won the regular-season title in the Big Ten with two games to spare, so you know that we are talking about an excellent ball club here. But no one has really been mentioning them as one of the favorites to make it through to the Final Four. Well, after beating Vermont in their opening-round game, they will face off against another team they have a size advantage over as they encounter the Iowa State Cyclones in the Round of 32, tipping off at 9:40 PM ET on Saturday, with TBS televising from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Both of these teams should have a healthy contingent of support, and both of them were pushed a little bit, but not too much, in advancing to this round of play. March Madness Betting: Purdue Boilermakers vs. Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State is now 24-10 straight-up and 19-12 ATS after scoring an 84-73 victory over Nevada on Thursday. By the way, that was the ninth straight game in which they have gone OVER the total. This is a team that plays “small ball” against its opponents, hoping for a quickness edge, especially when it comes to their activities out on the perimeter. The Cyclones are ninth best nationwide in shooting three-pointers, hitting 40.3% of them, and the winner of this game might largely be determined by whether Purdue can get out there and prevent some good looks. They were more than adequate doing that this season, as they surrendered only 32.4% accuracy.

While Iowa State starts four guards in the lineup, there are very few teams in the country who can break out the effective size Purdue can. The Boilermakers have one of the top players in the country in 6-9 forward Caleb Swanigan, who was second in the nation in rebounding this season (12.6 per game) and had 16 points with 14 rebounds in the 80-70 victory over Vermont. But maybe the real hero of that game was 6-8 forward Vincent Edwards, who scored 21 points. One of the things that is going to make it very difficult for Iowa State is the fact that Purdue not only has bigger people up front, they can bring effective big people off the bench, like seven-footer Isaac Haas, who carried a double-digit average this season.

BetAnySports patrons should also take note that even though the perception might be that Iowa State plays “faster” than Purdue does, the tempo figures for these two teams, on both offense and defense, or nearly identical. So don’t necessarily count that as a big edge in the Cyclones’ column.

What Iowa State DOES do is take care of the basketball, and they have nifty point guard in Monte Morris to help them do just that. Morris had the best ratio of assists to turnovers in the nation this season, even though he committed four miscues against Nevada. What Iowa State will have to do is to nail shots, whether they are beyond or inside the arc, because they are among the worst teams in the power conferences as far as rebounding is concerned.
