MLB Betting at Get That Bet – Padres Use First-Time Starter Against Cain and Giants

The San Francisco Giants are one of those teams that is struggling right now, and as their manager, Bruce Bochy, likes to point out, all teams undergo speed bumps at some point throughout the season. The Giants hope they have gotten over the worst of it as they take the field at AT&T Park on Monday night to face off against the San Diego Padres. They will send a former staff ace to the mound, but one who has only a single victory on the season. Meanwhile, San Diego will turn to someone making their major-league debut in MLB betting action that is scheduled to take place at 10:15 PM ET.

San Francisco had been on a horrible run where they had lost nine out of 10 games, but they closed out a weekend series against the Arizona Diamondbacks by winning the last two, so they return home with a record of 45-30, which is good enough to put them four games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. If they hadn’t emerged triumphant in those two games, they would have really been clinging onto a small advantage. The Padres, at 32-44, are no threat to win the NL West, but they seemed to play some inspired baseball this past week against the Dodgers after the death of franchise icon Tony Gwynn. However, they did suffer back to back losses to Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday, so they are once again looking for answers.

In the MLB betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at Get That Bet, the Giants are laying a price:

San Francisco Giants (Cain – R) -160
San Diego Padres (Despaigne – R) +140

Under 7 Runs -120
Over 7 Runs +100

Matt Cain has just a 1-5 record on the season, and is 4.52 ERA is much higher than baseball bettors have been used to seeing from him. He was banged around pretty good last time out, as the Chicago White Sox scored eight runs against him last Tuesday. It is actually quite remarkable that the Giants have spent much of the season with baseball’s best record without getting a big effort out of came, who would have been on a lot of people’s list of favorites to win the Cy Young at the season’s outset.

San Diego was originally scheduled to start Andrew Cashner in this game, and the bright youngster offered some hope, as he had a 2.36 ERA despite just a 2-6 record. But he had some arm problems, so he has been shelved, and the team has turned to Odrisamer Despaigne to fill that slot for Monday. Despaigne is a veteran of eight years of professional ball in Cuba, and while Get That Bet customers may not be familiar with him, since he was not the subject of some intense bidding like, say, Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox, who left Cuba last year, he does stand to create some problems for the Giants, inasmuch as he has the ability to throw the ball by hitters. At the minor league level, he averaged 11.8 K’s per nine innings, splitting time between El Paso and San Antonio. Maybe the Padres will hit a little more for him than they did for Cashner (they scored 2.24 runs per game for him), although we would not necessarily ask MLB bettors to go to the bank on it.
