NBA Betting Matchup: Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

There have been two meetings between these teams this season. On December 2, Detroit went to the Phillips Arena and hung a 121-85 lost on the Hawks, who shot just 36% for the evening. But Atlanta, looking for some revenge, came back with a 105-98 win on December 30, forcing 18 turnovers on the part of the Pistons. It should be noted that in that game, Kyle Korver, since traded to Cleveland, scored 22 points for the Hawks.

Detroit is coming off a victory at the Staples Center against the Los Angeles Lakers, which is good, because they were annihilated in the previous game 110-77 by the Utah Jazz. The Pistons are known for their defensive rebounding prowess, as they have grabbed the board on one of their own misses 80.4% of the time, which is the highest percentage in the NBA. Obviously, Andre Drummond is one of the best in the business, ranking second in the league in rebounding on both the offensive and defensive end.

But Drummond has a worthy opponent here in Dwight Howard, who has averaged 13.3 rebounds in his first season with the Hawks. And Detroit will have a hard time keeping Howard off the offensive boards (4.7 per game).

Last time out, Atlanta went to Madison Square Garden and beat the Knicks 108-107. Dennis Schroder, who is averaging 17.4 points per game, hit 13 at his 16 shots from the field. Schroder is a potentially explosive offensive player, and Atlanta handed him its starting point guard spot after dealing Jeff Teague to Indiana.

BetAnySports patrons should not count on Detroit beating itself a whole lot; the Pistons have taking care of the ball better than anyone in the NBA, committing only 12 turnovers per game.

However, that win over the Knicks was was Atlanta’s fifth in a row on the road, and they have now won nine of their last 10 overall. So they are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with their 24-17 record (21-20 ATS). Detroit, which made the playoffs last season in the #8 slot but were beaten the first round by Cleveland, is still within range to make it into the post-season, as they trail Chicago and Milwaukee by 2.5 games.

During this Atlanta string, Tim Hardaway Jr. has emerged as a pretty viable scoring option for the Hawks, scoring 20 points or more four times. He had 20 against New York, his former team, on Monday night.

There are a couple of injury questions for Detroit in this one. Forward John Leuer, who provides valuable minutes off the bench and shoots 51% from the field, with 6.1 rebounds per game, has a bone bruise in his knee and is questionable, as is guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has a shoulder injury.
