NCAA Football Odds at BetAnySports -- BYU Needs New QB Up to Task Against Nevada

The BYU Cougars had been harboring some high hopes as one of the nation’s few independent teams, with a national ranking, an undefeated campaign and a quarterback who was being given some mild Heisman consideration. Then all of that kind of evaporated as Taysom Hill suffered an injury against Utah State that has taken him out of action. So they have been breaking in the new kid, and they hope he has made some more progress as they line up to play host to the Nevada Wolf Pack, who will be looking to buck the NCAA football betting odds in Provo at 10:15 PM ET at Provo.

Nevada comes into this game with a 3-3 record, both straight-up and against the football pointspread, and they have the clear edge in terms of experience at the quarterback spot in Cody Fajardo.

In the college football betting lines that have been established on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Cougars are the double-digit favorites:

Hill’s left leg was fractured in a game against Utah State, and he has already undergone surgery for it. Coach Bronco Mendenhall said that even the doctors who operated on him were surprised at how bad the injury was. Needless to say, he is put for the year. And that is a shame, because Hill, who was an extremely capable runner (his 463 yards led the team) was also making progress as a passer.

Now the ball is in the hands of Christian Stewart, who has had a difficult time adjusting, to say the least. BetAnySports customers saw him with the “deer in the headlights” look as he was inserted into the fray when Hill went down against Utah State, competing ten out of 29 passes with three interceptions. He settled down a bit against Central Florida, hitting 22 out of 37 with three touchdowns, although BYU suffered a loss in overtime. He chipped in 52 rushing yards, although without depth at the position, he needs to be careful for the Cougars’ sake.

It’s a good thing that he will have some help, in all likelihood, from Jamaal Williams, a standout performer who injured his ankle against UCF in the first quarter and had to sit out the rest of the game. He should be okay for this start. But the Cougars are banged up on defense, where there is the possibility that four defensive players – key members of the rotation – will be missing.

Under Chris Ault, who invented the Pistol offense, the Wolf Pack was consistently among the nation’s leaders in rushing. At the moment they are ranked 54th, with 179 yards a game. BYU averages 211 yards on the ground, but that is likely to drop with every week Hill is out of the lineup.
