NCAA Tournament Betting: Marquette Golden Eagles vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Marquette comes into this game with a record of 19-12 straight-up, and 16-15 against the points. Their biggest win on the season came over Villanova, the defending national champions who are also the #1 overall seed in this tournament. They have scored two victories over both Xavier and Creighton, but they have gone only 5-6 in their last 11 contests.

South Carolina, from the Southeastern Conference, compiled a ledger of 22 victories against ten losses, with an 11-17 mark against the points. They scored victories over Florida and Michigan this season, but they did not finish strongly, losing six of their last nine games, and were unceremoniously booted out of the SEC in the first round against Alabama. They are making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004, but keep in mind that they have a quasi-advantage, and that they are virtually the home team here.

With Marquette, the story is simple; these guys can definitely shoot the ball. In fact, when it comes to dialing up “long-distance,” they are the best in the nation, nailing 43% of their three-pointers. The leader in that regard, and in the nation, is Markus Howard, the 5-11 freshman guard who has been 54.9% accurate from downtown. Another thing about Marquette is that they are one of the top 10 teams in the nation when it comes to making free throws, and this is something that could become a factor in a close game. Finally, there is extraordinary scoring balance, as five players in the rotation average between 10.9 and 13.1 points per game. And that makes them more difficult to defend.

But BetAnySports patrons know that South Carolina has had a lot of success defending teams this season. In fact, they are third nationally in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. And they have the ability to shut down any team’s arsenal of triples, as they give up slightly below 30% from long-range. A couple of things need to be noted, however; the Gamecocks have allowed teams to shoot 45% or better in five of the last 10 games, and South Carolina, coached by Frank Martin, the former head man at Kansas State, is not a good shooting team, with 41.6% accuracy overall. This does not help them when laying points, as they are only 8-14 ATS in that role.
