NFL Football Lines at Get That Bet — McCoy Tries to Come to Rescue For Redskins Against Surging Cowboys

The Washington Redskins can see the season slipping away from them, which is why they have to go into AT&T Stadium and come up with a victory; that is, if they still want to be involved in the playoff race by the time Robert Griffin III comes back from his injured ankle. It will be up to Colt McCoy to see that happens, as the Redskins take on the Dallas Cowboys at 8:30 PM ET on ESPN.

Very little went right for the Redskins after making the move to Kirk Cousins as starting quarterback in place of Griffin, although they had almost no choice in the matter. Until now, that is. When Cousins’ mistakes (nine INT’s, among other things) became a little too much to take, Jay Gruden lost patience and benched him. And it was Washington’s good fortune that Colt McCoy came in and engineered a couple of drives that propelled the ‘Skins to a 19-17 victory over Tennessee. Now he will have the opportunity to play, as Cousins sits.

It will only be beneficial if it helps to cut down on turnovers, and if the Redskins can improve what they do in other areas. The task is difficult, as the Cowboys are pushing almost all of the right buttons.

In the NFL Football lines on this game as they are posted by the people at Get That Bet (http://www.getthatbet.com), the Cowboys are laying appreciable points:

Dallas Cowboys -9.5
Washington Redskins +9.5

Over 49 points -110
Under 49 points -110

McCoy, who was not successful when he was the starting quarterback in Cleveland, has to figure out a way to take care of the ball better than Cousins, who through nine interceptions. Does a pretty good chance the Redskins will rely on the running game, and that means a heavy dose of Alfred Morris, who has played for games against Dallas in his career and rushed for 482 yards.

Then there are the guys who can stretch the field, if McCoy’s arm can handle it. In particular, DeSean Jackson has shown NFL bettors that he can make some big plays, and he is averaging 20.3 yards per reception. We know that the Dallas defense has come up with some excellent performances this season. But we also know that these guys have suffered from the loss of personnel, and they were the worst defense in the league last year. Kudos have to go to Rod Marinelli, the defensive coordinator, but by the same token, you wonder when someone might come along to expose the Cowboys’ stop unit as something that is rather middle-of-the-road. Get That Bet customers know that not too many championship teams have given up 4.9 yards per carry, or 6.1 yards per play. Time will tell, but at least Dallas has some of the other components that make it a difficult team to beat.

One of them is the guy who might be the most valuable player in the league so far. DeMarco Murray has averaged 140 yards per game and he is the first player in NFL history to run for at least 100 yards in each of the first seven games of the season. When he is playing at a high level, it makes it so much easier for Tony Romo, because defenses can’t just pin their ears back and chase him down, like they have in the recent past. The Cowboys actually run the ball more than they pass it, and that is unusual indeed.

There is a tremendous disparity between the success rate of these two squads on third down. Dallas converts 57% of the time, while the Redskins are successful only about 32%. In Washington consistently has the worst field position in the league. Those are two things they definitely have to overcome.

But the defense hasn’t been half bad; only one team in the NFL, coming into this weekend, was able to force ponds of the opposition in a higher percentage of drives. And remember another thing about the Redskins – they seem to show a lot more intensity when they play the Cowboys, as evidenced by seven covering efforts against the NFL betting lines in the last eight meetings between these two. So no one should expect an absolute cakewalk for Dallas, even though they have demonstrated they are clearly the better and more complete team.
