Is this the last gasp for Peyton Manning? The five-time MVP could really write a Cinderella story for himself by taking the Denver Broncos all the way to a Super Bowl title. But there are lingering doubts about his ability to get the football down the field and to really threaten the defense. Since he returned from his foot injury, which sidelined him for seven games, he has not really offered any evidence that he can put the team on his shoulders and drive them to a victory. Yet the Broncos win anyway, because of a dominating defense, and that defense must rise to the occasion against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the AFC title game, beginning at 3:05 PM ET at Sports Authority Field. It has been widely reported that Manning had a hard time adjusting to the offensive philosophy of head coach Gary Kubiak, who was not really interested in the no-huddle offense and wanted to place an emphasis on running the football. Manning had 17 interceptions, which was second-most in the league, even though he only started nine games. And in a game against Kansas City, he was taken out, later diagnosed with a foot injury, which kept him out until he was inserted again in the season finale against San Diego. Kubiak made the decision he had vowed to make all along, which was to start Manning when he was healthy, and in last week’s playoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he completed 21 of 37 passes for 220 yards. He did not throw an interception, which is obviously something that is significant.

For the Broncos, this becomes more a matter of controlling the football, minimizing mistakes, and relying on the defense to carry much of the load. And what a defense it is! Denver has allowed just 5.6 yards per passing attempt, held teams to 283 yards per game, sacked the quarterback 52 times, and surrendered only 4.6 yards per play, all figures that are best in the NFL. But the secondary has not been overly opportunistic, intercepting only 14 passes, and that is something BetAnySports patrons should keep in mind, considering that Tom Brady only through seven pickoffs during the season. And Brady sure is happy that he’s got Julian Edelman back in the lineup. As you may recall, Edelman suffered a foot injury on November 15, and he sat out until last week’s game against Kansas City. So he was welcomed back with open arms, and caught 10 passes for 100 yards last week. The Patriots don’t expect to run the ball all that much; they had 39 yards against Denver the first time around, and just 38 in the game against Kansas City. But as long as Brady has Edelman, tight end Rob Gronkowski, wideout Danny Amendola and a couple of running backs to throw to, he can be effective here.
