2018 AFC West Betting Preview

BetAnySports has recently updated its NFL betting odds for all eight division title races. One of the most interesting races on the board is in the AFC West. The Kansas City Chiefs have laid claim to the last two titles with a 12-4 record in 2016 followed by last year’s 10-6 campaign. The Chargers moved from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017 and made a run at the Chiefs with a record of 9-7. Both Oakland and Denver took a step backwards, but each team has made some significant player and coaching personnel moves to get back into the race.

Looking at this year’s betting odds to win the AFC West, BetAnySports has the Chargers listed at the top of the list as +135 favorites. The Chiefs have the second-best odds at +250 followed closely by Oakland at +300. Bringing up the rear in the division is Denver as a +525 longshot. The Broncos sunk to 5-11 in 2017 after posting a winning record in each of their past five seasons.

When it comes to finding the best value in the posted odds, the Oakland Raiders are an interesting play. After failing to cross the .500 mark in 13 consecutive seasons, the Raiders won 12 games in 2016 to earn a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs. A back slide to 6-10 last season cost head coach Jack Del Rio his job. In his place is Jon Gruden in his second stint with the team. Gruden led the Raiders to the postseason in the final two years at the helm in 2000 and 2001 and expectations are running high that he can quickly turn things around this season.

Philip Rivers is coming off a very productive season in Los Angeles after throwing for 4,515 yards and 28 touchdowns in his 12th season as the Chargers’ starting quarterback. One of the biggest pluses with Rivers is his reliability. He has stated all 16 games in each of those 12 campaigns. His top target in the passing game last year was Keenan Allen with 102 receptions for 1,393 yards and six touchdowns. Los Angeles could be the most balanced team in the AFC West with a defense that was third in the NFL last season in points allowed.

Kansas City might be poised to take a step backwards turning to Pat Mahomes as its new starting quarterback in his second season in the league. Case Keenum should be Denver’s starting quarterback heading into the regular season and he will have to prove that last season’s success in Minnesota was not a fluke.
