The TCU Horned Frogs are going to be working from behind the eight-ball as they line up against the Oregon Ducks in the Alamo Bowl, scheduled to get underway at 6:45 PM ET at the Alamodome in San Antonio. What makes this a very difficult assignment for them is the fact that they are without Trevone Boykin, their standout quarterback, who was involved in a bar scuffle and assaulted a police officer, thus drawing a suspension.

Boykin was considered to be a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy at the outset of the season. He fell short of that, but still had some outstanding numbers – 65% completions, 3574 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also had outstanding ability to pull the ball down and run with it (612 rushing yards). People have to fill the vacuum now, and it looks as if there will be a combination of Bram Kolhausen and Foster Sawyer taking snaps. They don’t have much experience; only 69 attempts between them, as a matter of fact, and BetAnySports customers may remember that they split time in TCU’s game against Oklahoma, which they were fortunate to take it right down to the wire before losing 30-29. To be fair, Oklahoma was operating in the second half without their own great quarterback, Baker Mayfield.

Much has been made about TCU’s attrition on the defensive side, and it is true that they lost a number of starting players, so the unit is very young. But for the most part, they were also pretty good, allowing only 49% completions on the season. But how much of a challenge are they going to pose to Oregon, which really got its act together the second half of the season?

It’s obvious a very tough when you have to graduate Heisman Trophy winner, and that was the case with the ducks this season as Marcus Mariota left school. But coach Mark Helfrich was kind of fortunate in that he was able to plug in a veteran. Vernon Adams had been a star at Eastern Washington, finishing twice as the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, which symbolizes the outstanding player in FCS football. He had to deal with a finger injury in the early part of the season, but then he got healthier, and the Oregon attack really got moving. This team scored six straight victories to close out the season, covering five of those against the football pointspread. Adams threw for 25 touchdowns and was intercepted only six times. At his disposal is one of the best running backs in the country; Royce Freeman , who rambled for 1708 yards and 14 touchdowns.

For BetAnySports patrons, the big question with Oregon is whether they can stop people. Their defense allowed 480 yards per game this season, permitting opposing quarterbacks to throw for 33 touchdowns. There is simply no excuse for giving up 742 yards to Arizona State or 641 to Washington State. Will the TCU quarterbacks be good enough to exploit that, as we point out that they will be without wide receiver Josh Doctson (1326 yards, 14 touchdowns)? TCU was supposed to be a point-scoring machine, but down the stretch, they only tallied 27 points a game in their last four. And it has been a rather disappointing campaign for this squad that had been ranked second in the nation when the polls came out at the start. Last year TCU was angry coming into its bowl game, because they were left out of the four-team college football playoff, and it showed, as they routed Ole Miss 42-3 in the Peach Bowl. Now their quarterbacks, on short notice, have to prove that they are ready for prime-time.
