Last football season ended in dramatic fashion with the Alabama Crimson Tide topping the Georgia Bulldogs 26-23 in overtime as three-point favorites. This was the Tide’s fifth national title since 2009 and with head coach Nick Saban still at the helm, the odds are in their favor to win against this season as +178 favorites.

Alabama has been an almost unstoppable power since Saban took over that position in 2007. With another strong recruiting class joining a number of key returning players, there is good reason to set the Tide as the top team in the nation and the clear favorite to win the SEC this season. The combination of a rushing offense that averaged 250.6 rushing yards per game with a defense that was ranked first in the nation in points allowed (11.5) led the way last season. All indications points towards Alabama being just as strong in each of these areas this year as well.

One team that figured out a way to beat the Tide for the 2016 national title was the ACC’s Clemson Tigers. They claimed that season’s championship with a thrilling 35-31 victory as 6.5-point underdogs. The Tigers made it back the four-team College Football Playoff last season, but their defense of that title came to an end with a 24-6 loss to the Tide as 3.5-point underdogs in the semifinal round. Clemson should be right back in the hunt in 2018 as a +650 second-favorite on BetAnySports’ futures list. The Tigers were second to Alabama in points allowed on defense (12.8) and the return of several starters on both sides of the ball make them the team to beat in the ACC.

Rounding out the top four teams in the nation are the Big Ten’s Ohio State Buckeyes at +835 betting odds along with Georgia at +875 as another team from the SEC. Things really start to drop off from there with Michigan fifth on the list at +2000 as the second team from the Big Ten. The Pac-12’s Washington Huskies’ odds to win are set at +2200 and the Big 12’s Oklahoma Sooners’ odds to win the 2018 national championship are set at +2500 along with the Big Ten’s Penn State Nittany Lions.
