BetAnySports College Football Betting Recap- Sept. 24

There is a reason why sports betting experts will often say there are no such things as ‘locks’ when it comes to the predicted outcome for games. In one of the most shocking upsets in college football in recent memory, the No. 13 team in the nation went down in defeat as 28-point road favorites to highlight Week 4 of the new season.

Betting the ACC’s Virginia Tech Hokies on the moneyline against the Conference USA’s Old Dominion Monarchs would have required a $7,000 risk to make $100, while the return on ODU winning this game straight-up was $3000 for that same $100 bet. The unthinkable became reality on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, VA. with the Monarchs pulling off the 49-35 victory behind a backup quarterback. ODU was 0-3 both SU and against the spread heading into that game.

The top four teams in the AP rankings maintained the status quo with lopsided wins, but there were a few other big shakeups in the national rankings over the weekend. No. 5 Oklahoma got by Army 28-21, but the Sooners came nowhere close to covering as 28.5-point favorites at home. They are now 4-0 SU with a costly 1-3 record ATS. Oklahoma will be at home against Baylor this Saturday as a 24-point favorite on BetAnySports’ opening line.

The SEC’s Mississippi State Bulldogs dropped nine spots to No. 23 following a 28-7 loss to Kentucky as 10-point road favorites in their first loss of the season (SU and ATS) against three earlier wins. The Bulldogs will be at home against Florida this Saturday as eight-point favorites.

Texas Tech made its move into the rankings at No. 25 by hammering then-No. 17 Oklahoma State 41-17 as a 14.5-point road underdog on Saturday. The Cowboys dropped out of the Top 25 with that loss. The Red Raiders have a chance to really make a splash in the Big 12 this Saturday as 4.5-point home underdogs against the No. 12 West Virginia Mountaineers.

TCU is another Big 12 program headed in the wrong direction at the expense of a 31-16 loss to Texas as a slight 2.5-point road favorite. At 2-2 SU and ATS, Horned Frogs are out of the national rankings, but the SU 3-1 (2-2 ATS) Longhorns have taken their place at No. 18 in the latest AP poll.

Losses by No. 22 Texas A&M and No. 23 Boston College also opened the door for California (No. 24) and Duke (No. 22) to make their debut on the Top 25 list.
