Follow The Under As Western Conference Playoff Race Heats Up

With just five points separating sixth place from 10th place in the Western Conference playoff race, the situation is still wide open for the teams on the fringe heading in to the final couple weeks of action. The St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, and Columbus Blue Jackets are all in that mix, and that leads us to an interesting online sports betting trend to keep an eye on heading in to this final stretch. All five of these teams have struggled to score goals at times this season, and lately they have each done a much better job of cutting down their goals per game allowed and playing tight-checking hockey with every point being so valuable. This gives reason to stick with the Under bet when playing these teams over these next couple of weeks, as they close things down and try to find a way in to the elite eight.

The Blues are the perfect example of a team that has committed to closing things down with a tight-checking game and playing playoff hockey. St. Louis has played six-straight games in which the total is five goals are under, down from their season average as they were playing a much looser brand of hockey earlier in the year. With the Vancouver Canucks, Phoenix Coyotes, and Dallas Stars around the corner, there is no reason to think the Blues will start to hit Over the totals prior to the Kentucky Derby betting.

The same could be said for the Wild and Red Wings, although many online sports betting players will stick with St. Louis for the Under over any other team on this list. Minnesota’s games have gone Over the total just one time in their last seven contests, while Detroit’s games have gone Over the total just one time in their last seven contests as well. Those numbers rival what the Blues have done, and even if they do hit one or two Over bets for the game, the majority of Wild and Red Wings’ games will stay Under.

Dallas is another team that has played a lot of low scoring games, and will do what they can to protect goaltender Richard Bachman with Kari Lehtonen out. The Stars though have a much tougher schedule with the Chicago Blackhawks and Canucks coming up, although a date with the Blues could be the perfect storm for an Under. Next to St. Louis, the best team to ride the Under with is likely the Blue Jackets, who have also gone seven-straight games without going Over the total. Sergei Bobrovsky has emerged as a Vezina candidate goaltender, and the team in front of him is just scoring enough to win games. The next two weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby odds being released promises to see a bunch of low scoring NHL games as the Western Conference playoff race heats up, so make sure not to overlook this trend.
