The Alabama Crimson Tide had a rather easy time of it in the Cotton Bowl against Michigan State on New Year’s Eve, and they were able to completely flummox quarterback Connor Cook, who is considered to be a top NFL prospect. But they will face a completely different challenge from the Clemson Tigers, who have a quarterback who cannot only move around, but just might be one of the top players in the country. Coach Nick Saban goes after his fifth national championship (fourth with Alabama) in what is officially known as the College Football Playoff national championship, beginning at 8:30 PM ET on Monday night at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. This game, along with all the other major bowl games, is televised by ESPN, and BetAnySports customers can watch the game live and place wagers on it while it is in progress through the phenomenon known as Live Betting Extra.

To give you some of the numbers, Clemson comes into this game with a record of 14-0 straight-up and 7-5-2 against the spread. They defeated Oklahoma 37-17 in the Orange Bowl, which served as one of the semi-final games in the four-team playoff. They completely stymied Oklahoma’s rushing attack in that game, and gave quarterback Baker Mayfield fits. At the same time, quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Wayne Gallman combined for 295 yards on the ground, shredding a proud Oklahoma defense.

Alabama is 13-1 straight-up and 8-6 ATS. Their only loss came at the hands of Ole Miss, in a wild game in which Chad Kelly, quarterback of the Rebels, utilized his mobility to lead a Mississippi attack that gained 433 yards, most against the Crimson Tide this season. Alabama’s quarterback, Jake Coker, was also intercepted three times, and that enabled Ole Miss to play with a short field on some of its drives.

Needless to say, Alabama has gotten its act together. Over the last seven games, they have allowed 10 points per game, and in their last six contests, they have surrendered a TOTAL of 363 rushing yards. Make no mistake about it; if you try to move the ball on the ground through conventional means against this team, you are going to be met with a brick wall. That is why it is somewhat fortuitous for Clemson to have such a nimble quarterback, and that is the major challenge for this Alabama stop unit.

BetAnySports patrons know that Clemson’s defense will obviously have its hands full with Derrick Henry, who won the Heisman Trophy and has tallied 2061 rushing yards. It seemed that Alabama was using him as something of a decoy in the early going against Michigan State in the dominant 38-0 victory in the Cotton Bowl, and because the Spartans were concentrating on stopping him (indeed, he only had 75 yards), they opened themselves up to Coker and a potent aerial attack. The Florida State transfer found freshman Calvin Ridley for two touchdowns (and 138 yards) and the defense took care of the rest.

This much must be said for Clemson – they will have an opportunity to give Coker a hard time, because defensive ends Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd are very capable pass rushers. And that is something that helped this secondary to surrender only 48% completions on the season. However, Alabama’s offensive line has been up to the challenge over the last five games, yielding only four sacks.
