NCAA Tournament Matchup -- South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Baylor Bears

South Carolina, which is now 24-10 on the season, turned back Marquette with prejudice in their first game, winning 93-73 with the help of 54 points in the second half. They were expected to get much more of a challenge against Duke in the second round, but they held Coach K’s team to just 41.5% from the field, and once again erupted on offense, at 65 second-half points in the 88-81 triumph. Sindarius Thornwell, the 6-5 guard who led the team in scoring this season (21.4 points per game) had 29 against Marquette and added 24 against Duke. But Duane Notice (17 points) and Chris Silva (also with 17) provided balance. They also forced Duke to turn the ball over 18 times, and that is a hallmark of this South Carolina squad. It is also something Baylor has to worry about, since the Bears turned it over at a rate of 20.5% of all possessions, which ranks #305 on the NCAA list.

BetAnySports patrons might have heard that this is the first time South Carolina has ever reached the Sweet 16, and their victories in the tournament where their first in the Big Dance since 1973. So unquestionably Martin has brought this program to new heights. The argument is also made on the part of some that the Gamecocks enjoyed plenty of home cooking at Greenville, but won’t experience the same here. They played at Madison Square Garden on December 12, losing a one-point decision to Seton Hall.

Baylor has gotten some offensive contributions out of unexpected places thus far. The bench averaged 20.2 points coming into the NCAA Tournament, but has had 67 points in the first two games. Terry Maston has been a very pleasant surprise, with 19 points and nine rebounds against the both New Mexico State and USC. Point guard Manu LeComte a has to be on the mark; the Miami transfer had just one turnover in these two games, and put forth a big effort late against the Trojans. But Johnathan Motley, the All-American who led this team with 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, has turned it over eight times in his first two games. If Baylor can get something going on the offensive glass, and perhaps slow down the pace of play – something they have done on defense about as well as anybody – they have a great opportunity to advance to the Elite 8, and perhaps the Final Four, since Duke and Villanova are now eliminated from the East region.
