Horse Racing Report: 2015 Triple Crown Futures Odds Update

The Triple Crown of horse racing for three-year old thoroughbreds consists of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. This final leg of the series is the Belmont and it will be run on Saturday, June 6 with American Pharoah making his bid to win all three Grade 1 events.

The simple fact that in 140 years of Triple Crown racing only 11 horses have ever won all three events with the last coming in 1978 when Affirmed successfully completed this feat, it would stand to reason that the smart bet this time around is to take GTBETS -115 betting odds that American Pharoah does not win the Belmont to lay claim to all three jewels of this crown. This is especially true when you take into account that betting odds that he does win are also set at -115.

Since 1978 there have 13 horses that have won the first two legs of this series only to come-up short in the 1 ½ mile run in the Belmont Stakes, which is easily the hardest test these three-year olds will face all year long. Just in the past 13 years we have seen six horses put themselves in position to win a Triple Crown. In 2004, Smarty Jones came painfully close with a second-place finish in the Belmont. Two years ago, I’ll Have Another did not even get a chance to compete after being a late scratch for the final race and last year California Crown faded to fourth in the Belmont after posting impressive victories in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Take a look at the best USA Racebooks.

The field for this year’s Belmont has yet to be finalized, but it appears that Frosted will be the greatest threat to ending this run as a second favorite after finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness. Another horse to watch is trainer Todd Pletcher’s entry Carpe Diem. This three-year old was highly touted after he won the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in early April, but he followed that up with a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He was held out of the Preakness as well.

A few other three-year olds that are expected in the field for the Belmont include Materiality, Mubttahij, and Keen Ice. All three of these of these horses ran in the Derby while opting out of the Preakness, but none finished better than sixth in the “Run for the Roses”. Top
