The Jacksonville Jaguars fought to the end last week but came up a little short against the Green Bay Packers. If you want to judge their performance strcitly by the numbers, you would have to say that their revamped defense has shown some improvement from last year’s dismal effort. They were challenged by an excellent quarterback last time out, and the same will be the case this week, as they face off against Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers in a game that begins at 4:25 PM ET on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. BetAnySports customers are lucky, because they can place wagers on the game even after it has started, through the state-of-the-art software available from Live Betting Ultra. The Jags held the Green Bay Packers to 294 yards of offense last Sunday, but lost 27-23. Blake Bortles came out slinging, with 320 yards passing, and they-they have to like what they got out of the stop unit, holding Aaron Rodgers to just 5.9 yards per attempt. They added lots of talent in the off-season on defense, including veterans Malik Jackson and Tashaun Gipson, not to mention rookies Myles Jack and Jalen Ramsey. This is a critical season for head coach Gus Bradley, who has not yet produced a winner since coming over from the Seattle Seahawks, where he was defensive coordinator.

The Chargers suffered a crushing defeat in their opener, as they blew a 24-3 lead in Kansas City. There were some good things to come out of that game, including the emergence of a rushing attack, but there was some very bad news as well, as they lost wide receiver Keenan Allen to the season with a torn ACL.

Chris Ivory, a running back Jacksonville acquired in the off-season to complement TJ Yeldon, was held out of last week’s game, hospitalized due to “a general medical issue.” So he would be something of a question for this game. But the Jags need some help on the ground, as Yeldon was held to just 39 yards on 21 carries.

In terms of what they’ve got to offer on offense, Jacksonville has a top wide receiver tandem in Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson, and that has to be a little bit scary for San Diego, which allowed Alex Smith to throw for 363 yards against them.

But at least for a half of last week’s game, BetAnySports patrons were able to witness San Diego offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt’s plan really come to life. Melvin Gordon, who was last year’s top draft choice out of Wisconsin, but severely disappointed as a rookie, had his first two rushing touchdowns in the NFL, and between him and Danny Woodhead, they had 146 yards on 30 carries. That’s a lot more than San Diego was able to brag about last season.

But now we have the psychological situation at work here – the Chargers blew a lead in a game they clearly should have won, and lost their best receiver in the process. There are also getting closer to what might be an unsuccessful referendum to stay in the city with a new stadium, and all of that creates a lot of pressure from within.

But there is hardly a cooler customer than Rivers out there playing quarterback, and the Bolts will definitely test this Jacksonville stop unit, which needs to demonstrate over the course of the season that it has improved by leaps and bounds if the Jaguars are going to contend in the AFC South.
